Upgrading from Prior Revisions of DataFlex
Upgrading from prior revisions of DataFlex is easy. Simply follow these steps:
-
Install DataFlex Studio on the same system where you have the prior revision of DataFlex installed. Since the new release of DataFlex uses a new set of folders, registry entries, and service names, it will not impact the running of your existing DataFlex at all.
-
From inside the Studio, select "Open Workspace" from the File menu, then select the Studio workspace file of the workspace to be migrated. The Workspace Migration Wizard will start. Just follow the on-screen instructions, and your workspace will be migrated to the current revision of DataFlex.
Converting Applications to DataFlex 2021 and Higher
DataFlex now supports Unicode data and compiling applications for both 64 and 32-bit. To fully adjust your application to use the new features, a few steps must be taken after running through the Workspace Migration Wizard.
Follow the instructions documented in Migrating Existing Workspaces to DataFlex 2021 to enable your workspace and applications to take full advantage of what the latest DataFlex revision has to offer.
Of Special Note
Migrations from revisions prior to 12.0 require a multi-step process as follows:
-
To migrate a workspace from a revision of DataFlex between 8.0 and 11.1, you need to install DataFlex revision 18.2 and run its Migration Wizard. After that migration is completed, your workspace will be up to 18.2 specifications. You may then open your workspace in the current revision of DataFlex and run its Migration Wizard to bring your workspace up to date.
-
To migrate a workspace from a revision of DataFlex prior to 8.0, you need to install DataFlex revision 11.1 and run its Migration Wizard. After that migration is completed, your workspace will be up to 11.1 specifications. Follow the steps described above for updating to the current revision of DataFlex.
In addition to these steps, bringing older DataFlex applications into newer environments often means dealing with the many changes that have taken place in both DataFlex and the Windows host environment. We have kept the documentation written at the time of those changes in place for your review, but keep in mind that they reference the then-current DataFlex and Windows revisions, not the current environments.
